Professor Mika Sillanpää received his M.Sc. (Eng.) and D. Sc. (Eng.) degrees from the Helsinki University of Technology (presently known as Aalto University, where he also completed MBA degree in 2013). He completed his Master studies in the field of Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Helsinki University of Technology (Finland) within 2.7 years, creating a new record in the history of the Department of the University. This achievement facilitated him to be the youngest Ph.D. holder (27 years old) in the same Department of the University in 1997. This was the starting point for him to embark on a progressive academic career in the field of environmental engineering through publications in peer-reviewed journals, leading to his nomination as the youngest holding an academic rank of professorship in Finland at the time. Since 2000, he has been a full professor at the University of Oulu, University of Kuopio and University of Eastern Finland. Currently, he is a professor in the Lappeenranta University of Technology and the head of the Laboratory of Green Chemistry, Director at the Department of LUT Green Chemistry Laboratory and LUT Savo. As a key academic at the Lappeenranta University of Technology with close to 20 years' scholarly research, teaching, and supervision experiences, Mika Sillanpää has brought the laboratory’s research in water treatment at an internationally recognized level.
